DUFF HOUSE, BANFF, BRIDGE STREET, BRIDGE OF BANFF LODGE
Location: Situated on the West side of the Deveron Bridge, Brig O'Banff. Before the road bypassing the Old Market Place, was built this was the entrance to Duff House from the East, traffic for the town had to turn right and travel along past the shore towards Bridge St.
OS Map Reference: NJ 694 638
Date:
Description: A small classical pedimented pavilion with Venetian windows (now blocked and painted with false panes). A solitary survivor of a pair that guarded the eastern entrance of the Duff House policies. It has been relocated and truncated and is now used as an electricity sub-station and the basement for supermarket trolleys. Well weathered sandstone crests - May show a lion rampant which is the Fife family heraldic device and crest, adorn the East and West pediments of the gate house.
Related Information: Old photographs show that there also used to be a house attached which must have been knocked down it's now the location of Somerfield's car park. The gates themselves were removed to Banff castle (see related artefacts), but sadly have now had their lanterns removed, when they renovated the Castle Lodge the electricity was disconnected from the lanterns and they were removed, they are currently in the cellar of the castle. This part of the town shows much of the blight created in our towns by the supremacy given to road developments and commercial interests while disregarding consideration of real amenity and aesthetics.
